Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in an electronic format. We prefer Microsoft Word (doc or docx), PDF, or LaTeX (.tex).
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided, and all sources are cited using APA style.
  • The manuscript is double-spaced and uses a professional font (e.g., Times New Roman or Arial).
  • The text adheres to APA 7 style. In particular, figure and table captions and headings, inline citations, and reference list adhere to APA 7 style.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, all identifying information has been removed from the manuscript and its metadata, in accordance with the instructions for ensuring an anonymous review.
  • Any use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., for brainstorming, proofreading, or data analysis) has been disclosed in the manuscript, including details of the tools used and their purpose.
  • The manuscript reflects the original intellectual contributions of the author(s), even if AI tools were used to assist in its preparation.
  • The manuscript aligns with the journal’s mission to support the teaching and learning of mathematics across PreK–16 classrooms. Context and implementation ideas are provided to ensure relevance to practicing educators.

Author Guidelines

Aims and Scope
The Ohio Journal of School Mathematics (OJSM) publishes work that supports the teaching and learning of mathematics across K–16 settings. We welcome manuscripts that explore classroom practice, instructional innovations, curriculum design, teacher preparation, technology integration, and other topics that connect mathematical ideas to pedagogy. Submissions should prioritize the human side of mathematics—how students and teachers engage with mathematical thinking—rather than focusing solely on mathematical content or proofs.

Formatting Requirements
Manuscripts should be double-spaced, use 12-point font, and include figures and tables within the text at appropriate points. References and figures should be formatted according to APA 7 Guidelines.

How to Submit
Interested in submitting to OJSM? Authors must register with the journal prior to submitting. If you are already registered, simply log in to begin the submission process. (If our submission portal changes, updated instructions will be provided on the OJSM homepage.)

AI in the Publication Process
OJSM embraces the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to enhance the writing and communication process for both authors and editors.

OJSM’s Use of AI Includes: Screening manuscripts for adherence to structural and content guidelines; summarizing and communicating feedback from review panelists; and enhancing editorial communication with authors throughout the publication process.

Encouragement for Authors: We encourage authors to explore AI tools to support their writing and revision process. AI may assist with: (1) Brainstorming: Developing ideas and refining initial drafts; (2) Proofreading and Editing: Improving grammar, structure, and coherence; (3) Data Analysis: Interpreting, organizing, and reporting data; and (4) Consistency Checks: Ensuring alignment across manuscript sections.

AI use should not replace the author’s original analysis, reflection, or instructional insight. To foster trust and accountability, authors must disclose any use of AI tools in their manuscript. Submissions coauthored with AI will be explicitly marked as such in publication.

OJSM Reviewer Criteria

Every manuscript submitted to OJSM is reviewed with the following criteria:

  1. Relevance & Contribution: Does the article connect meaningfully to the teaching and learning of mathematics? Is the topic timely and relevant for teachers and students?
  2. Clarity & Structure: Is the writing clear and well-organized? Are key terms and ideas explained well for a broad audience? Are examples or visuals (if any) used effectively?
  3. Evidence & Rationale: Are claims supported by research, classroom experience, or thoughtful reflection?
  4. Practical Usefulness: Can educators apply or adapt the ideas in their classrooms? Are tools, prompts, or models clearly described for real use?
  5. Voice & Tone: Is the tone collegial, thoughtful, and inclusive? Does it invite curiosity and engagement?

Authors are encouraged to review these criteria before submitting. Our goal is to support writers at every stage and to help shape manuscripts that are useful, engaging, and relevant to the broader math education community.
