Abstract

In this article, we explain how to involve students in the mathematical modeling process. We discuss the modeling framework from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. In particular, we share findings from a post-placing activity that engaged high school students in the modeling process.

I am a PhD candidate at Ohio University, majoring in mathematics education. Currently, I am co-teaching mathematics at Alexander High School. My interest is in teaching and learning of mathematical modeling and designing professional developments for mathematics teachers.

Jami Durkee, Cambridge High School

I graduated from Muskingum University with a BS in Mathematics. I am a high school teacher at Cambridge High School. I have taught Algebra I in an inclusion co-taught classroom and non-inclusion classroom as well as Geometry in an inclusion co-taught classroom. Interests are Algebra and Geometry and using modeling to help students to see the real life value of mathematics.
